I couldn't get into this book. I wasn't sure if it's maybe the timing when I read this book or something else. I felt distracted and actually stopped reading the book halfway. I ended up finishing it at some point. I will try reading this book again in the future and revise the review accordingly if I feel any different.Product details

Reading Coming Attractions, Bobbi Marolt's first novel, is a pleasant way to spend an afternoon. Well known NYC newspaper columnist Helen Townsend has decided it's time to come out. Out of the emotional hiding she's been living in while recovering from the loss of her lover to cancer, and out of the "passing for straight" closet her feminine looks have allowed her. Come out in a big way.
Just as she begins to plan a major coming out show for herself and a number of broadway and motion picture stars, Helen meets Cory Chamberlain. Cory is beautiful, intelligent, enigmatic and a world renown pianist. Intensely attracted to one another, Cory and Helen become lovers. There are several obstacles on the way to the "Stars Come Out" show. Not the least of which is Cory's cold feet at participating in the show, after she is been offered the position as conductor of a Boston orchestra.
For its length, the plot seems unnecessarily complicated; consequently it sometimes lacks development or follow through of some story threads. And some of the secondary characters are difficult to keep straight (as it were). Marolt is willing to introduce a very powerful issue in the importance for gays and lesbians, particularly prominent professionals in show business, to come out. Yet she doesn't address the complexities of coming out to this reader's satisfaction. Having said that, Coming Attractions is a promising and entertaining first novel. It is interesting to have this "romance" deal with this issue in such a manner. And the ending at show night is fun and touching. Hopefully, Marolt will continue to develop her writing.
I love books with a show biz background and Bobbi Marolt is very good at writing that kind of story.
I enjoyed the women in this story. I liked Helen and Cory a lot and most of the supporting characters as well. I admire the way Ms. Marolt writes dialog between her characters. Quick and easy banter is not easy to pull off but the author makes their conversations seem natural.
The book was a quick and entertaining read. I wish it had gone just a little further in explaining why Helen felt the need to come out at that point in her life. Also I would have liked an epilogue letting us know where the characters were around six months after the climax of the story but that's just me.
"Between the Lines" is still my favorite by this author but I'm very glad she re-released this story. And more importantly I'm glad I read it.
Helen Townsend's column is starting to reflect her inner conflict. She's feeling as if it's time to come out of the closet after living so long with her privacy. As it's been years since her partner passed away from cancer, she's also starting to realize she's ready for a new relationship. A green-eyed woman who has gone out of her way to capture Helen's attention may be just the person to help her with both. What if Cory changes her mind and doesn't support Helen's decision to come out based on her own fears?
`Coming Attractions' is an interesting romance novel. Especially since the decision to come out affects many more people than just the person coming out. I loved the characters and the situations they found themselves in felt very real. The situations felt so real because they do happen every day. Sometimes the risk to come out is too great - depending on the person's location, career, or situation. Yet sometimes it's far riskier to stay in the closet because you are not being true to yourself. Sure, there were times I wanted to shake both Cory and Helen, but the frustration can be part of the growing pains of a new relationship. Ultimately, `Coming Attractions' is a sweet romance with characters you will definitely become attached to by the end.
If I had to write a list of my all time favorite lesbian fiction novels, this would top the list. I've read this book countless times, and it always makes me laugh, cry, and do somersaults (okay, one of those is not true!) Bobbi Marolt is not your run-of-the-mill who just throws words together and calls it a book. She is an honest-to-God author who writes with wit and maturity, and is always a pleasure to read. If you're looking for a break from all of the poorly-written and non-edited nonsense that is topping the charts these days, do yourself a favor and treat yourself to this book.
